What a monitoring app can — and can't — do
A baby monitor app can be genuinely useful — and it's important to be clear‑eyed about where its usefulness ends. Here's an honest account, because a monitor you understand is a monitor you'll use well.
What it's good at
- Hearing the room. From another part of the house, you can listen in and catch stirring, fussing, or crying.
- A gentle heads‑up. It can nudge you when the room gets loud or when the connection drops.
- Talking back. You can soothe with your voice without walking in.
What it cannot do
No phone app — ours included — can do these things, and you should never rely on one as if it could:
- It cannot detect breathing, heart rate, or medical emergencies.
- It cannot diagnose illness or predict problems like SIDS.
- It cannot guarantee that an alert will reach you. Phones sleep, Wi‑Fi drops, batteries die, and the operating system can delay or withhold notifications.
- It cannot replace an adult in the room.
The honest bottom line: Baby Talkie is a convenience monitor, not a safety or medical device. It helps you listen in — it does not keep your child safe on its own.
How to use one wisely
- Treat alerts as a helpful extra, not a guarantee — check in regularly in person.
- Keep the Baby Unit charging and out of reach, cords away from the crib.
- Follow safe‑sleep guidance from your paediatrician; an app changes none of it.
We built Baby Talkie to be calm and honest about all of this — which is why the app tells you the same thing during setup, not just here.
